Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo is one of the most controversial and brilliant Spanish politicians, journalists and intellectuals of her generation.

In 2019, following the international success of his books, Yuval Noah Harari and Itzik Yahav co-founded Sapienship: a social impact company with projects in the fields of entertainment and education. Sapienship’s main goal is to focus the public conversation on the most important global challenges facing the world today.

Yuval Noah Harari gave keynote speeches on the future of humanity in Davos 2020 and 2018, on the World Economic Forum’s main Congress Hall stage. Published in 2014, Harari’s Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind has become an international hit. 21 Million copies had been sold and the book was translated into 65 languages. It is a New York Times top 10 bestseller, and held positions #1-#3 on the Sunday Times’ bestseller list for 96 consecutive weeks. After exploring deep into the past and then the future, Yuval Noah Harari published 21 Lessons for the 21st Century in 2018. Prof. Harari’s writings have received several accolades. In 2020, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from VUB (the Free University of Brussels). In 2019, 21 Lessons was honoured as ‘Knowledge Book of the Year’ by the German magazine Bild der Wissenschaft, Homo Deus was recognized as the ’Wise Book of the Year’ by Krakow’s Jagiellonian University, and Sapiens won the ‘Academic Book of the Year’ prize at the UK’s Academic Book Trade Awards. El paso al cine angloparlante se dio cuando Lelio fue convocado por Rachel Weisz para co-escribir y dirigir Disobedience (2018), basada en la novela de Naomi Alderman. Le película fue protagonizada por la misma Rachel Weisz y por Rachel MacAdams. Disobedience recibió 5 nominaciones a los Independent British Film Awards ganando en la categoría de Mejor Actor de Reparto para Alessandro Nivola.

Su última cinta es Gloria Bell (2019), protagonizada ahora por Julianne Moore y John Turturro. Según The Hollywood Reporter “Gloria Bell es una de las cintas con una protagonista femenina más importantes del Siglo XXI”.

Lelio ha sido jurado en las secciones oficiales de los festivales de Sundance (2014) y Berlinale (2019), bajo la presidencia de Juliette Binoche.

Actualmente Lelio prepara dos nuevos largometrajes en inglés, con reparto y producción internacional, a ser filmados a partir de 2020.

These words certainly explain how a humble kid born in La Pobla de Segur, a town of 2,500 inhabitants in the mountains of Catalonia, with no football tradition and with more enthusiasm that talent, grew to become one of the greatest players in football history.

In the beginning he wanted to be a goalkeeper until a back injury forced him to change. So he became a striker, and being regarded as “The Romario from La Pobla”. Arriving at Barça an opportunity arose to become a right wing-back. He finished his career as one of the best central defenders in history. Clearly the position was not important for Puyol. He could be flexible in the way but totally inflexible on the objective. The goal for Puyol was not simply playing or making money. His dream was to succeed at Barça.

In the farewell tribute, Canal+ said: “His life has been linked to FC Barcelona. He came as a teenager. He leaves as the best captain in Barça’s history and the one who has raised most titles, 21. But Carles Puyol is much more than that. He is a way of doing things. Integrity, loyalty, effort, kindness. Each of his acts was an example for his teammates, opponents and fans. This would explain the program´s title: Puyol, more than a captain!!!

Together with the Argentine team he played 22 games (nine in the World Cup) and scored 7 goals, proclaim-ing himself World Champion in Mexico '86. After retiring as a player, he was the coach of Tenerife, Real Madrid and Valencia.

He served as Sports Director of Real Madrid between 1997 and 2005, where he established a new and successful organizational and sports management system. In 2009 he was ap-pointed General Director of the Club, a position he held until 2011.

Joan Laporta, leader of F.C Barcelona on two occasions, was the star and architect of one of the most outstanding cases of organizational transformation, business and sporting success.

Diana Trujillo is a Space Explorer and Aerospace Engineer currently serving as a Flight Director on the Mars Perseverance Mission, which is helping NASA determine if ancient life ever existed on the surface of Mars.

Born and raised in Colombia, Diana immigrated to the United States at the age of 17, coming with little knowledge of English and almost no money to her name, but also with the goal of pursuing her dream of working for NASA.

En 2005 regresó a EL PAÍS, inicialmente como subdirector a cargo de la edición dominical, y posteriormente como director adjunto. En 2006, coincidiendo con el 30º aniversario del periódico, fue nombrado director, cargo que ejerció hasta mayo de 2014. En esos años, el periódico llevó adelante la primera gran reforma de la edición impresa desde su fundación. También fusionó las redacciones impresa y digital para lanzar la actual edición digital. 

Bajo su dirección, la Redacción participó en exclusivas internacionales como los cables secretos del Departamento de Estado de EEUU, junto con The New York Times o The Guardian; la exclusiva conocida como Chinaleaks, los ‘papeles de Guantánamo’, así como relevantes informaciones nacionales como los papeles de Bárcenas, entre muchas otras. En 2013 puso en marcha la edición América de este periódico.

Tras dejar la dirección de EL PAÍS en 2014, Moreno fue el director-fundador de la Leading European Newspaper Alliance (LENA), que agrupa a ocho periódicos líderes en Europa (Le Figaro, Le Soir, Tages-Anzeiger, Tribune de Genève, Die Welt, La Repubblica, Gazeta Wyborcza y EL PAÍS). Dirigió la Escuela de Periodismo UAM-EL PAÍS desde diciembre de 2017 hasta junio de 2018, fecha en la que fue nombrado director de EL PAÍS en América, con sede en Ciudad de México.

Es un colaborador regular del Hay Festival, habiendo liderado maravillosas conversaciones con grandes personajes como Dilma Rousseff, Joseph Stiglitz, Michelle Bachelet y Mario Vargas Llosa, entre otros. 

A lo largo de su carrera como periodista, entrevistó también a numerosos líderes políticos en América Latina y el resto del mundo: Barack Obama, Angela Merkel, Felipe Calderón, Enrique Peña Nieto, Juan Manuel Santos, Ollanta Humala, Martín Vizcarra, Hugo Chávez, Shimon Peres, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan y Mahmud Ahmadineyad, entre otros. En España entrevistó también en numerosas ocasiones a los presidentes del Gobierno cuyo mandato coincidió con su dirección en el periódico: José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero y Mariano Rajoy.

Juan Gabriel Vásquez (Bogotá, 1973) is the author of the short story collections The Lovers of All Saints and Songs for the Fire (Colombian Narrative Library Award) and the novels The Informants, The Secret History of Costaguana, The Sound of Things Falling (Alfaguara Prize, Gregor von Rezzori Prize, International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award), Reputations (Royal Spanish Academy Award, Archbishop John of San Clemente Prize, Casa da América Latina in Lisbon Award), The Shape of Ruins (Casino da Póvoa Literary Prize and finalist for the Man Booker Prize), Looking Back (Mario Vargas Llosa Biennial Novel Prize, Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger, Casino de Santiago European Novel Prize) and Feliza's Names.

Vásquez has also published three books of essays, The Art of Distortion, Travels with a Blank Map, and The Translation of the World; a collection of his journalistic writings on Colombian politics, The Disagreements of Peace; and a book of poems, September Notebook. He has translated works by Joseph Conrad and Victor Hugo, among others.

For his work, he has won the Prix Roger Caillois in France, the Blue Metropolis Prize in Canada, and the Extraordinary Calamo Prize in Spain. In 2016, he was named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic, and in 2018, he received the Order of Isabella the Catholic. In 2022, he was named an International Writer by the Royal Society of Literature. His books are published in 30 languages. He is a columnist for El País and a member of the Colombian Academy of Language.

Throughout his career, Juan Gabriel has delivered lectures at some of the world’s most prestigious universities—Oxford, Columbia, Georgetown, Freie Universität Berlin, and the University of Bern, among others—as well as at corporate and industry events. A master on stage, he has engaged in insightful conversations with renowned figures such as Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, Salman Rushdie, Jonathan Franzen, Philippe Sands, Hisham Matar, Leila Guerriero, Abdulrazak Gurnah, Irene Vallejo, and many more.

Héctor Abad Faciolince is a prominent Colombian writer, essayist, translator, editor, and journalist, author of multiple internationally acclaimed novels. He is considered one of the most talented writers of the Latin American post-boom.

In 1987, he graduated in Modern Languages and Literatures from the University of Turin. After the murder of his father, the renowned doctor and professor Héctor Abad Gómez, he went into exile in Spain and later in Italy, where he worked as a "Spanish reader" at the University of Verona until 1992. Since his student years, he has translated various Italian authors into Spanish: Umberto Eco, Leonardo Sciascia, Italo Calvino, Tomasi di Lampedusa, Gesualdo Bufalino, Primo Levi, and Natalia Ginzburg, among others. He has also translated books from French (Voltaire’s Candide) and English (Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories).

In 1992, he returned to Colombia and worked in various editorial roles: he directed the University of Antioquia Magazine for three years and was also the director of the Editorial Fund at EAFIT University. He also worked as a journalist and columnist for various Colombian media outlets, including El Espectador, Cromos, El Colombiano, and the magazines Cambio and Semana.

In 2000, his novel Garbage won the First Casa de América Innovative Narrative Award; in 2004, his novel Narrow was awarded the Best Foreign Novel of the Year in China; and in 2006, he received a DAAD scholarship (Künstler Programm for outstanding artists) and lived in Berlin for a year.

In November 2006, he published his most celebrated book, The Oblivion We Shall Be, in which he recounts the story of his father, Dr. Héctor Abad Gómez, and the circumstances of his murder. For this book, he has received awards in Lisbon and Washington (the WOLA-Duke Award for Human Rights). In 2020, The Oblivion We Shall Be was adapted into a film by Fernando Trueba and was selected for the official section of the Cannes Film Festival. It was also chosen by Colombia to compete in the Goya and Oscar awards.

His literary works often focus on the personality of the narrator and their quest for protection and independence. The intensity of his narratives, along with the seriousness of his social, historical, and human research, positions Abad as a brilliant chronicler of contemporary society through literature. He is the author of various works, including Bad Thoughts, The Affairs of a Dissolute Nobleman, Treatise on Culinary for Sad Women, Fragments of Furtive Love, Garbage, Loose Words, The East Begins in Cairo, The Oblivion We Shall Be, and La Oculta, among others.

He has been invited as a speaker at several universities, including Columbia, Harvard, and Cornell in the United States, the University of Verona, the University of Turin, the University of Bologna, and the University of Florence. He has also been a visiting professor at the Università del Piemonte Orientale in Vercelli. He was a guest professor at the Freie Universität Berlin for the Samuel Fischer Chair of Comparative Literatures (summer semester of 2016). He was a fellow of the NIAS in The Hague, Netherlands, in 2017. He was the Director of the EAFIT University Library and founded the Colombian Narrative Library Award there. He has served as a jury member and president of the jury for the Alfaguara International Novel Prize. He has also been a jury member for the FIL Literature Prize (Guadalajara). He is the founder and director of Angosta Editores, an independent Colombian publishing house.

Due to the brilliance of his style and writing, this Colombian novelist is regarded as one of the most outstanding contemporary authors in the Spanish language. Much of his literary work has been translated into different languages, including English, Italian, French, Portuguese, Chinese, and German. He is currently a columnist and editorial advisor for El Espectador newspaper. He also collaborates with El País of Spain and other national and international publications.
In his conferences, he shares his enthusiasm for life, culture, music, reading, cinema, and knowledge as tools that help people become more resilient and even happier. Héctor Abad Faciolince is a master at using cultural resources in times of crisis to overcome difficulties. In his talks, he always starts from the human to converge on the cultural, and from the personal to reach the general interest.

Carlos Granés se doctoró en Antropología Social por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Estuvo becado en la Universidad de Berkeley, California, donde finalizó su tesis sobre antropología del arte, a la que posteriormente se le otorgó la máxima calificación (cum laude) y el Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado.

En 2008 publicó La revancha de la imaginación. Antropología de los procesos de creación: Mario Vargas Llosa y José Alejandro Restrepo (2008). Seleccionó y prologó los artículos de Mario Vargas Llosa reunidos en Sables y Utopías. Visiones de América Latina (2009). Sus ensayos han sido traducidos al portugués, francés e inglés y han aparecido en distintos medios de Brasil, Colombia, México y España y en distintas recopilaciones, como Horizontes estéticos (2010) y Pensar la realidad (2011), libro que reúne los mejores ensayos publicados en la revista Letras Libres. Es colaborador habitual de esta revista, así como de la sección de cultura del diario O Estado de S. Paulo, y del diario El Espectador. Fue galardonado con el Premio Internacional de Ensayo Isabel Polanco por El puño invisible (Taurus, 2011), un riguroso trabajo sobre las vanguardias culturales del siglo xx.

Ha dado conferencias sobre literatura y arte en universidades e instituciones culturales de Colombia, España y Argelia. Fue asistente de dirección de la Cátedra Vargas Llosa, proyecto que pretende promover la literatura, las ideas y la cultura en América Latina y España, además de generar debate en torno a los problemas más urgentes del mundo contemporáneo. En 2015 publicó La invención del paraíso; y en 2019, Salvajes de una nueva época, un ensayo en el que examina las tensiones entre la cultura, el mercado y el populismo contemporáneo; y nos ofrece un certero diagnóstico del presente y nos muestra con contundentes ejemplos el modo en que, paradójicamente, mientras el arte se vuelve políticamente correcto y renuncia a las estrategias de la vanguardia, la política opta por tácticas transgresoras y escandalosas para captar la atención del otro.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born in Enugu, Nigeria in 1977. She grew up on the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where her father was a Professor and her mother was the first female Registrar. She studied medicine for a year at Nsukka and then left for the US at the age of 19 to continue her education on a different path.

She graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State University with a degree in Communication and Political Science.

She has a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Arts degree in African History from Yale University. She was awarded a Hodder fellowship at Princeton University for the 2005-2006 academic year, and a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute of Harvard University for the 2011-2012 academic year. In 2008, she received a MacArthur Fellowship.

She has received honorary doctorate degrees from Eastern Connecticut State University, Johns Hopkins University, Haverford College, Williams College, the University of Edinburgh, Duke University, Amherst College, Bowdoin College, SOAS University of London, American University, Georgetown University, Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design, and Northwestern University.

Ms. Adichie’s work has been translated into over thirty languages.

Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus (2003), won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, and her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun (2006), won the Orange Prize. Her 2013 novel Americanah won the US National Book Critics Circle Award, and was named one of The New York Times Top Ten Best Books of 2013.

She has delivered two landmark TED talks: her 2009 TED Talk The Danger of A Single Story and her 2012 TEDx Euston talk We Should All Be Feminists, which started a world-wide conversation about feminism, and was published as a book in 2014.

Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions, was published in March 2017.

Her most recent work, Notes On Grief, an essay about losing her father, has just been published.

She was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2015. In 2017, Fortune Magazine named her one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders. She is a member of both the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Ms. Adichie divides her time between the United States and Nigeria, where she leads an annual creative writing workshop.
 

Anousheh is currently the CEO of the XPRIZE Foundation, the world’s leader in designing and operating large incentive competitions to solve humanity’s grand challenges. Ansari, along with her family, sponsored the organization’s first competition, the Ansari XPRIZE, a $10 million competition that ignited a new era for commercial spaceflight. Since then, she has served on XPRIZE’s Board of Directors.

Prior to being named CEO of XPRIZE, Ansari co-founded and served as the CEO of Prodea Systems, a leading Internet of Things (IoT) technology firm. In 2006, she captured headlines around the world when she embarked upon an 11-day space expedition, accomplishing her childhood dream of flying to space. As a result of her mission, she became the first female private space explorer, first astronaut of Iranian descent, first Muslim woman in space, and fourth private explorer to visit space.

Ansari serves on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Future Council and has received numerous honors, including the WEF Young Global Leader, Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and STEM Leadership Hall of Fame, among others. She is a UNESCO Good Will Ambassador and serves on the board of Jabil (NYSE: JBL) and Peace First, as well as several other not-for-profit organizations focused on STEM education, youth empowerment and social entrepreneurship.

Ansari also co-founded The Billion Dollar Fund for Women, announced in October 2018 at the Tri Hita Karana (THK) Forum on Sustainable Development in Bali, with a goal of investing $1 billion in women-founded companies by 2020.  She currently works to enable social entrepreneurs to bring about radical change globally, with organizations such as X Prize, ASHOKA and the PARSA Community Foundation.

She believes the key to a better future for humankind is in the hands of our young generation, and it is up to us to provide them with the right tools through education and as good role models. Through it all, Anousheh continues to quote Gandhi, one of her personal he-roes, who said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

She published her memoir, My Dream of Stars, to share her life story as inspiration for young women around the world.

Ansari holds a BS in electronics and computer engineering from George Mason University, an MS in electrical engineering from George Washington University; and honorary doctorates from George Mason University, Utah Valley University, and International Space University.

Anousheh has always dreamed of traveling to space, and while she is extremely excited to realize this dream, she is also focused on sharing her experience with others. Her main objective for this mission is to become a Space Ambassador, and help to bring the space travel experience to others:

• As a Space Ambassador, act as a messenger to create public awareness and stimulate grassroots enthusiasm about the virtues of space exploration;
• To inspire youth, and especially girls, around the world to pursue their dreams; and,
• To promote peace and understanding amongst nations as the world’s first Space Ambassador.

Mientras residía en Estados Unidos, Costa notó que el desarrollo web no necesitaba de una instrucción especial, sino que un gran número de desarrolladores web eran autodidactas. De la misma forma, al volver a su natal Perú, advirtió la casi nula participación femenina en estos aspectos, lo cual se tradujo en la idea de Laboratoria. Este proyecto nace desde la necesidad de capacitar a mujer de escasos recursos en temas relacionados al desarrollo de páginas web.

La trayectoria de la empresa empezó en 2014, cuando Costa organizó un programa piloto para 15 jóvenes, las cuales recibieron formación en desarrollo web. Laboratoria terminó el año 2015 con 130 mujeres formadas y más de 300 candidatas al proyecto.

Por su trabajo,  ha sido reconocida como una de las jóvenes más innovadoras del Perú por el MIT, una de las mujeres más influyentes del mundo por la BBC, y por líderes globales como el Presidente Obama y Mark Zuckerberg. Antes de convertirse en emprendedora social, Mariana trabajó en la Organización de Estados Americanos, implementando proyectos para incrementar el acceso al registro civil en Centro América y el Caribe.

Dr. Peterson is a professor at the University of Toronto, a clinical psychologist and the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos. Professor Ian Goldin is Professor of Globalisation and Development at the University of Oxford. He is a Professorial Fellow at the University’s Balliol College. From 2006 to 2016 he was the founding Director of the Oxford Martin School and currently leads the Oxford Martin Research Programmes on Technological and Economic Change, the Future of Work, and the Future of Development. 

During his decade as Director the School established 45 programmes of research, bringing together more than 500 academics from across Oxford, from over 100 disciplines, to create the world’s leading centre for interdisciplinary research into critical global challenges.

Professor Goldin initiated and was Vice-Chair of the Oxford Martin Commission for Future Generations, which brought together 19 international leaders from government, business, academia, media and civil society to address the growing short-term preoccupations of modern politics and business, and identify ways of overcoming today’s gridlock in key international negotiations. The Commission’s report, Now for the Long Term, was published in October 2013.
From 2003 to 2006 he was Vice President of the World Bank, and prior to that the Bank’s Director of Development Policy (2001-2003). He served on the Bank’s senior management team and led the Bank’s collaboration with the United Nations and other partners as well as with key countries. As Director of Development Policy, he played a pivotal role in the re-search and strategy agenda of the Bank.

From 1996 to 2001 he was Chief Executive and Managing Director of the Development Bank of Southern Africa and served as an advisor to President Nelson Mandela. He succeeded in transforming the Bank to become the leading agent of development in the 14 countries of Southern Africa. During this period, Goldin served on several Government committees and Boards, and was Finance Director for South Africa’s Olympic Bid.

Previously, Goldin was Principal Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London, and Programme Director at the OECD Development Centre in Paris, where he directed the Programmes on Trade, Environment and Sustainable Development.

He has a BA (Hons) and a BSc from the University of Cape Town, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and an MA and Doctorate from the University of Oxford.
Ian has served as a non-executive director on the boards of a number of leading businesses, including Old Mutual, Implenia AG, Metropolitan Life, and CDC Plc. His board positions include being the lead independent director and chairing investment, credit, risk, audit, strategy, remuneration, social responsibility and ethics committees. Ian has advised over 50 governments and 100 leading global businesses. His non-profit activities include being the Chair of the CORE-econ initiative to reform global economics and serving as an honorary trustee of Comic Relief and other charities.

Goldin has received wide recognition for his contributions to development and research, including having been knighted by the French Government, receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Romania and nominated Global Leader of Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum. These advances – in fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, computing, synthetic biology, 3D printing, medicine, and nanomaterials – are making it possible for small teams to do what was once possible only for governments and large corporations to do: solve the grand challenges in education, water, food, shelter, health, and security.

In 2012, the U.S. Government awarded Wadhwa distinguished recognition as an “Outstanding American by Choice” for his “commitment to this country and to the common civic values that unite us as Americans”.

He was also named one of the world’s “Top 100 Global Thinkers” by Foreign Policy magazine in that year; in June 2013, he was on TIME magazine’s list of “Tech 40”, one of forty of the most influential minds in tech; and in September 2015, he was second on a list of “ten men worth emulating” in The Financial Times. In 2018, he was awarded Silicon Valley Forum’s Visionary Award, a list of luminaries “who have made Silicon Valley synonymous with creativity and life-changing advancements in technology”.

Earlier in his academic career, Wadhwa studied remedies for the effect of globalization on U.S. competitiveness. His team’s report on engineers’ education, in 2005, dispelled myths that India’s and China’s graduation rates were ten times U.S. ones. Though both India and China graduate many more “engineers” than the U.S. does, their definitions of those terms include everyone from mechanics to trade-school graduates. Elite institutions in both countries do turn out world-class engineers, but their numbers are small. Wadhwa’s subsequent research revealed why companies were going off shore and highlighted new trends in the globalization of R&D and innovation. To explain how India was achieving success despite its weak education system, Wadhwa published a seminal research report that analyzed its surrogate education system and workforce-development practices. Indian companies, in particular, have become global centers of excellence in high-skill areas, including software development, chip design, pharmaceutical research, and advanced engineering tasks such as aircraft-engine design. Wadhwa found that the best Indian companies more than compensated for the inadequacy of the country’s education system by developing their own, highly innovative, training programs.

Wadhwa’s teams’ research on American competitive advantages focused on entrepreneurship, skilled immigration, and university-research commercialization. It revealed key insights into the ages, education backgrounds, and motivations of tech entrepreneurs, and documented that more than one in four U.S. technology startups from 1995 to 2005 was founded by an immigrant. These immigrants tended to be highly educated, with strong backgrounds in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Wadhwa found that a flawed immigration system had created a backlog of more than a million skilled workers who were waiting for permanent-resident visas and that this backlog had the potential to cause a sizable brain drain of talent from the U.S. to other countries and a weakening of U.S. competitiveness. His research then tracked returnees to India and China and determined that they were having greater success back home.

Wadhwa has also researched Silicon Valley’s diversity, or the lack of it. He documented that women entrepreneurs have the same backgrounds and motivations as men do, but are rare in the ranks of technology CEOs and CTOs.

Wadhwa has collaborated with highly regarded academics from Stanford, Harvard, Duke, NYU, UC-Berkeley, and other universities. His research, which has been supported by several grants from the Kauffman Foundation and by the Sloan Foundation, has been cited in thousands of national and international media outlets since 2007, and has gained the attention of policy makers. Wadhwa has delivered keynote speeches at hundreds of conferences, including those of the National Governors Association and the National Academy of Sciences.

Before becoming an academic, Wadhwa was a technology executive known for pioneering change and innovation. He started his career as a software developer and gained a deep understanding of the challenges in building computer systems. His quest to help solve some of I.T.’s most daunting problems began at New York–based investment banking powerhouse CS First Boston (CSFB), where he was Vice President of Information Services. There he spearheaded the development of technology for creating computer-aided software-writing systems that was so successful that CSFB decided to spin off that business unit into its own company, Seer Technologies. As its Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Wadhwa helped grow the nascent startup into a $118 million publicly traded company.

With the explosive growth of the Internet, Wadhwa saw an even greater opportunity to help businesses adapt to new and fast-changing technologies, and founded Relativity Technologies. As a result of his vision, Forbes.com named Wadhwa a “Leader of Tomorrow”, and Fortune magazine declared Relativity one of the 25 coolest companies in the world.

Wadhwa holds a B.A. in Computing Studies from the University of Canberra, in Australia, and an MBA from New York University. Col. Nicole Malachowski, USAF (Ret.) defies stereotypes. Yes, she was a jet fighter pilot, but if you think you know her based on that, you'd be wrong. A leader, a combat veteran, the first woman pilot on the Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron, a White House Fellow, and an inductee into both the National Women's Hall of Fame and the Women in Aviation International Pioneer Hall of Fame, Nicole's distinguished 21-year Air Force career exceeded her wildest dreams. But the dream came to an end when a devastating tick-borne illness left her struggling greatly to speak or walk for almost nine months. An indomitable spirit, Nicole fought back against overwhelming odds and prevailed. While other high school students were practicing for their driver’s license, Nicole was accumulating flight time. She was sixteen years old when she took her first solo flight and from that point on there was no stopping her. While in high school, she joined the Civil Air Patrol and participated in Air Force Junior ROTC. Nicole’s professional story began when she earned her commission from the United States Air Force Academy in 1996. Following graduation, she attended Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) at Columbus AFB, MS and began her career as a pilot. Competitively selected to fly combat aircraft, she was among the first group of women to fly modern fighter aircraft. As a career pilot, she served in combat as an F-15E Flight Commander, Evaluator, Instructor Pilot and Flight Lead. Over her 21-year career, Nicole achieved the rating of Command Pilot with over 2,300 flight hours in six different Air Force aircraft. She was also selected to fly as Thunderbird #3 with the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron – the first woman to fly on any Department of De-fense military jet demonstration squadron. Colonel Malachowski has served as a mission ready fighter pilot in three operational F-15E fighter squadrons and has flown over 188 combat hours, including her proudest moment as a fighter pilot: leading the first fighter formation to provide security for Iraq’s historic democratic elections in 2005.

On the ground, Nicole was a White House Fellow, class of 2008-2009, where she served on the Presidential Transition Support Team (PTST) while assigned to the U.S. General Services Administration. The White House Fellows Foundation and Association awarded Nicole the 2019 IMPACT Award for demonstrating both remarkable achievement and transformational contributions in her field, as well as a sustained commitment to the White House Fellows program. Nicole also served two high-level staff assignments at the Pentagon – one in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD P&R) as well as the Secretary of the Air Force Office of International Affairs (SAF/IA). She also served as the Executive Director of the White House’s national ‘Joining Forces’ initiative where she directly advised former First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden on all topics relating to service members, veterans, and military families to include employment, education, mental health, veterans’ homelessness and more.

Nicole’s operational F-15E assignments include two tours of duty at RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom as well as one operational assignment to Seymour Johnson AFB, NC. She has also served alongside the United States Army 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Red Cloud, Republic of Korea, as an Air Liaison Officer. During her second assignment to Seymour Johnson AFB, NC, she had the honor of commanding the 333rd Fighter Squadron, leading an elite cadre of F-15E Instructors in the training of the next generation of combat aviators. Further, she was responsible for resources totaling over $1.1B and the execution of a $119M annual flying hour program.

Nicole earned a Master of Arts, with honors, in National Security Policy from American Military University and a second Master of Arts, with highest distinction, in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. While there, she earned the Admiral Stephen B. Luce Award as the class honor graduate, the first Air Force officer in the history of the Naval War College to do so. Nicole has been recognized with several honors for her consistent contributions to community service. As Nicole continues to recover from her neurological tick-borne illness, she embraces any opportunity to educate others about her medical journey and gains energy from educating others about this growing epidemic. She is on the Board of Directors at the LivLyme Foundation and is a Patient Advisory Board Member of The Dean Center for Tick Borne Illness.

Colonel Nicole Malachowski, USAF (Ret.) was born in Santa Maria, CA and graduated high school in Las Vegas, NV. She and her husband Paul have twin children; son Garrick and daughter Norah. Paul is a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and former F-15E Evaluator Weapons Systems Officer.
 

Marc Randolph is a veteran Silicon Valley entrepreneur, advisor, investor and keynote speaker. Marc was co-founder of the online movie and television streaming service Netflix, serving as their founding CEO, as the executive producer of their web site, and as a member of their board of directors until his retirement in 2004.

Although best known for starting Netflix, Marc’s career as an entrepreneur spans more than four decades. Dr. Saifedean Ammous is the author of The Bitcoin Standard: The Decentralized Alterna-tive to Central Banking, the best-selling groundbreaking study of the economics of bitcoin. Dr. Ammous holds a PhD in Sustainable Development from Columbia University, where his doctoral thesis studied the economics of biofuels and alternative energy sources. Iqram Magdon-Ismail is responsible for revolutionizing the way the world exchanges money. A New York-based entrepreneur, he is best known for co-founding the digital payment platform, Venmo.

Venmo first launched in 2009, after Iqram went to visit co-founder Andrew Kortina in New York City for the weekend and forgot his wallet. The pair soon realized that their problem was a universal challenge that people faced daily, and developed an app that allows you to send money to someone with just a tap on your smartphone.

Venmo was acquired by Braintree in 2012 for $26.2 million. Only a year later, Braintree went on to be acquired by PayPal for $800 million. Today, Venmo processes more than $6.8 billion in payments per quarter – with plans to exponentially scale their year-over-year growth through their relationship with PayPal.

Prior to starting Venmo, Iqram was raised in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Uganda before immigrating to the United States. He currently spends his time working on Ense, a social voice platform he founded in 2016, which allows users to share information, stories, conversations and more through short audio clips.

He was named one of Inc.’s 30 Under 30 in 2010, and honored as a "Great Immigrant" by the Carnegie Foundation in 2016.

Brian David Johnson is a Professor of Practice at Arizona State University’s School for the Future of Innovation in Society, and a Futurist and Fellow at Frost & Sullivan, a visionary innovation company that’s focused on growth.

Johnsons also works with governments, militaries, trade organizations, and startups to help them envision their future. He has over 30 patents and is the author of a number of books of fiction and nonfiction.

A former chief futurist at Intel Corporation, his charter was to develop an actionable vision for computing in 2020. His work was called “future casting”—using ethnographic field studies, technology research, trend data, and even science fiction to provide Intel with a pragmatic vision of consumers and computing. Along with reinventing TV, Johnson had been pioneering development in artificial intelligence, robotics, and using science fiction as a design tool.

He has directed two feature films, and is an illustrator and commissioned painter. 

The glue that holds society together is trust – trust in banks, governments, media, as well as each other. But trust is transforming; institutional trust is eroding while people are depending on peer-to-peer trust more than ever. Neha Narula, director of the Digital Currency Initiative at MIT, believes digital currencies and blockchains – public ledgers in which transactions between users in a network are stored in a secure, verifiable and permanent way – offer a positive path forward in an era of shifting trust by maintaining the integrity of online transactions, records and other underpinnings of commerce. While these concepts have received enormous press attention, fundamental questions remain about how these technologies work and what they mean for our future economic wellbeing.

An engaging speaker, Narula is adept at presenting the complex details of currencies and blockchains; she’s impassioned, understandable and relatable. She believes blockchains will cause the emergence of new services that are both more accessible and transparent. Beyond transparency, digital currencies hold the promise of allowing people and companies to send and receive money across borders and disintermediate banks, brokerages, and currency exchanges. While financial institutions will still play a large role, they will need to adapt to this new ecosystem, as Narula explains in “The Future of Money,” her brief yet powerful TED Talk. But blockchain technology can be applied well beyond finance, increasing accountability and credibility for businesses, media, governments and non-profits. One application area needing transparency, for example, is the food supply chain, where blockchains can provide assurance about safety, quality and provenance of food substances.

Narula’s research and insights have garnered widespread acclaim: she was named to the 2018 Thinkers50 Radar list of management thinkers most likely to shape the future of how organizations are managed and led, as well as Fortune’s The Ledger 40 Under 40 list. Narula earned a PhD in computer science at MIT, during the completion of which she built computer databases, kindling her interest and enthusiasm in the blockchains that comprise cryptocurrency transactions. Lex is a futurist and entrepreneur working on the next generation of financial services. He is the Head Economist and Global Fintech Co-Head at ConsenSys, a blockchain technology company building the infrastructure and applications that enable a decentralized world. Lex focuses on protocol crypto-economics, digital assets, public and private blockchains, and decentralized finance and autonomous organizations.

Ziauddin Yousafzai is a co-founder and board member of Malala Fund and Malala’s father. For many years, Ziauddin served as a teacher and school administrator in his home country of Pakistan. 

When the Taliban invaded their home in Swat Valley, Ziauddin peacefully resisted their efforts to limit personal freedoms. Speaking out put Ziauddin at risk, but he feared remaining silent would be far worse. Inspired by her father’s example, Malala began publicly campaigning for girls to go to school.

In October 2009, The New York Times filmed a short documentary about Ziauddin and Malala’s fight to protect girls’ education in Swat. Due to her increased prominence, Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban two years later. Malala survived and was transported to the United Kingdom for treatment. Ziauddin, his wife, Toor Pekai and their two sons joined Malala in Birmingham. Determined to continue their campaign, Ziauddin and Malala founded Malala Fund in 2013. Together they champion every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education.

If Malala Yousafzai has anything to do with it every girl in the world will have the opportunity to learn and lead. Her immediate focus is providing access to 130 million girls who have been denied the right to education. Through the work of Malala Fund, co-founded with her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, this seemingly audacious goal is, in Malala’s words, a matter of “ambition and intention.” What to do is then easy.

There are not many young women who have survived an assassination attempt, or become the youngest Nobel Peace Laureate, or opened the largest library in Europe declaring “pens and books are the weapons that will defeat terrorism." Even with these accomplishments, Malala does not consider herself extraordinary. That is “simply Malala,” as she would describe herself.

Inspired by her father’s activism, Malala began her campaign for girls’ education at age 11 with her anonymous blog for the BBC, Diary of a Pakistani Schoolgirl, about life under the Taliban. Malala soon began advocating publicly for girls’ education. She would join her father on his visits to neighboring villages to recruit for the school. While he spoke to the men, she would speak to the women. Their crusade was the subject of a New York Times short documentary in 2009. Independently, Malala began attracting international media attention and awards. Due to her increased prominence, at age 15 she was attacked by the Taliban for speaking out. Malala recovered in the United Kingdom and has continued her fight for girls ever since. In 2013, she founded Malala Fund with her father. A year later, Malala received the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts to see every girl complete 12 years of free, safe, quality education. Since then, the UN recognized July 12 as Malala Day in honor of young activists, and she recently completed her undergraduate degree at Oxford University, with a focus on Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.

As a recent Oxford graduate, Malala continues to be a catalyzing force in the fight against the ideologies that prohibit educational opportunities for women, globally. It is not just the educational inequities that Malala stands against, it’s the systemic byproducts of violence against women, poverty, and displacement which threaten both their freedoms and their futures. To eradicate the systemic consequences of educational inequities is to empower girls to become women who also achieve greatness.

Malala is the author of three books, I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, Malala’s Magic Pencil and We Are Displaced: My Journey and Stories from Refugee Girls Around the World.

In 2021, Malala started a partnership with Apple to create programming for Apple TV+ spanning “dramas, comedies, documentaries, animation, and children’s series, and draw on her ability to inspire people around the world.”
