ETHAN NADELMANN

Leading Authority on Drug Control Policies

Described by the Rolling Stone magazine as "the point man for drug-policy reform efforts", Ethan Nadelmann is one of the most respected commentators on international drug control policies.

Nadelmann founded the Lindesmith Center, a leading drug policy institute created in 1994 (with the philanthropic support of George Soros). In the year 2000, the center merged with another organization to form the Drug Policy Alliance, which advocates for drug policies grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights. He now serves as the Executive Director of the Drug Policy Alliance, America's leading drug policy reform organization.

Nadelmann's writings on drug policy have been featured in numerous scholarly and policy journals and magazines such as Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, Science, The Nation, Rolling Stone, and most major newspapers. He has also published extensively on international criminal law enforcement, including two books, "Cops across Borders" (1993) and "Policing the Globe" (2006, with Peter Andreas).

His critiques of drug control policies and recommendations regarding harm reduction strategies and alternatives to punitive drug prohibition have attracted international attention, and played a decisive role in stimulating the growing debate over drug policy. He has spoken to diverse audiences throughout the world and appeared on scores of radio and TV programs in dozens of countries.

Nadelmann received his BA, JD and Ph.D in Political Science from Harvard University, as well as a Master's degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics. From 1987 to 1994 he served as an assistant professor of Politics and Public Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.
