RICARDO ÁVILA

Senior Analyst at El Tiempo and former Editor-in-Chief at Portafolio (2007-2019)



Ricardo Ávila, one of Colombia's foremost authorities on economic and political analysis; he was Editor-in-Chief at Portfolio (2007-2019), the leading financial newspaper in the country.

He is also Deputy Editor-in-Chief at El Tiempo, the leading newspaper in Colombia. Prior to joining Portafolio, he was Editor in Chief and President of Cambio Magazine, and Editorial Consultant, Editor and Correspondent in the U.S and France for Semana Magazine. While working with Semana, he won the Simón Bolívar National Prize of Journalism.

In the public sector he worked as Economic Presidential Advisor and Private Assistant to the President of Colombia. Additionally, he served as Deputy Minister of International Economic Affairs during the government of César Gaviria and as Chief of Staff at the Office of the Secretary General of the Organization of American States.

He has been Professor of Econometrics and Economic Journalism at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia), consultant to the Inter-American Development Bank, and consultant to the Andean Development Corporation on numerous occasions. He is the author of "More Future than Present" (2009) and "Latin America and the Domino Effect" (2010).

Ricardo Ávila holds a degree in Economics from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and a master's degree in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh.
